Gaining the skills and confidence to create a work of art is truly enabling. I believe in teaching from a strong knowledge base, delivering skills, encouraging experimentation and nurturing self-expression. My areas of focus are representational and figurative art. My studio practice is woven together with my role as a teacher. For fifteen years I have taught regular adult weekly classes in life drawing, painting and sculpture from my studio. Each week people spend time making and learning in the same space that I make all my work. This is a communal way of being that I am immensely proud of. My students observe my work as it develops, their input is naturally a valuable part of my own development as an artist.
If you live near my studio in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, you can take part in my weekly art classes. I also lead a limited number of art masterclasses and the occasional art holiday. All sessions take place in a working group studio, with a structure to inspire artists of all levels of experience. The relaxed yet purposeful atmosphere enables everyone to discover and achieve amongst small groups of like-minded friends.
Weekly Classes
Life Drawing
If you’re going to learn to draw, draw from the figure. Life drawing is rigorous, but it’s also huge fun, with profound discoveries to be made.
In order to attend you just have to bring yourself and some enthusiasm. The course includes drawing media such as charcoal, pencils, ink, pastels etc. Good quality drawing cartridge and other papers are also included. The studio is equipped with easels, drawing boards and all you should need.
The course structure includes regular lessons in formal drawing. Line, tone, perspective, mark-making, blending, foreshortening, portraiture and many other subjects are discussed. You will be introduced to the work of other artists and encouraged to experiment and express yourself.
Drawing and Painting
Wether you’re beginning to discover your creative side, or looking to develop further, you’ll benefit from this class. With a good balance of structured teaching and supported working, this is a real all-rounder for artists of any level. You can expect to be led through the steps from drawing to finished painting.
You’ll draw in different ways, study colour application, under-painting, blocking in, light values, reflected colour, blending and detailing techniques. The exploration of formal training is balanced with the expressive qualities of the painter- the language of mark making and paint application. Participants work in a range of media including Oil, Acrylic, Watercolour, Alkyd, and various drawing and printmaking methods.
Wood Carving
Carving is a beautiful process. The textures, sounds and aroma of the materials will awaken your senses, accompanied by the rhythms of each student driving chisel with mallet. In this class you'll work using finest quality hand tools to carve green timber. Everything is provided. You’ll be shown how to care for tools and where to acquire your own.
No previous experience is required. Your first class will take the form of a structured introduction to the tools and processes involved. In the following weeks you’ll complete your first project. This is a guided workshop with a maximum of eight participants, where the tutor is on hand to provide tuition, advice and assistance as you develop your own project. New students start with the 6 week introductory relief carving class. After this, the only limit is your imagination. Previous participants have made everything from a Möbius strip to a woodblock printing plate, along with many animals, figures, heads, owls, green men…
